5-Day Intermediate Kayak Program: Master the Basics and Build Confidence

In our 5-day intermediate whitewater kayak program, you’ll refine the foundational skills needed to confidently paddle through Class II-III rapids on the Ottawa River. This program is designed to help paddlers master stroke techniques, improve timing, and build proficiency in key whitewater skills. Whether you’re refining your boat control or learning advanced river maneuvers, this course will give you the skills and confidence needed to navigate the mighty Ottawa River with ease.

For those serious about advancing their skills, we highly recommend our 5-day program. This extended course offers more time on the water, allowing paddlers to fine-tune their skills and immerse themselves fully in the Ottawa River’s best features. Whether you’re learning to cartwheel, loop, or simply improve your overall paddling, the 5-day intermediate program is the ideal choice.

Prerequisite: Build on Your Existing Skills

To ensure your success in the Intermediate Whitewater Kayak Program, participants must have a flat-water roll and exhibit proficient boat control in Class II-III rapids. Don’t worry—our instructors will guide you through the process of “bombproofing” your combat roll, ensuring you’re fully prepared for the river challenges ahead.

Key Skills You’ll Learn and Master:

In this course, you’ll develop critical techniques and strategies to help you tackle more challenging rapids and enhance your overall paddling ability. Here’s an overview of the essential skills you’ll work on:

  • Scouting & Dissecting Class III Rapids: Learn how to read and analyze rapids for the best lines, giving you a tactical advantage when navigating challenging water.
  • Stroke Choice, Timing, and Compound Stroke Refinement: Perfect your stroke technique, including timing and compound strokes, to maximize efficiency in dynamic water.
  • Ferrying, Eddy Turns & Peel Outs: Gain confidence in navigating dynamic water through techniques like ferrying, eddy turns, and peel outs.
  • Carving and Redirecting Momentum: Master the art of carving and redirecting your momentum in and out of eddies to maintain control and power.
  • Using River Features to Navigate Complex Rapids: Learn how to use river features such as waves, holes, and rocks to help you navigate complex rapids.
  • Surfing Waves, Holes, and Spinning: Improve your skills in surfing and spinning on whitewater features, an essential part of advanced whitewater kayaking.
  • Boofing and Using Rocks: Master boofing and learn to use rocks and other river features to navigate through powerful water.
  • River Safety Techniques: Understand the importance of river safety, including self-rescue, assisted rescue techniques, and effective communication.
  • Fine-tuning Bracing and Rolling: Continue to develop your bracing and rolling techniques to improve stability and confidence on the river.
Daily Structure: Learning with Expert Instructors

Each day begins with a review of the basics and a focus on whitewater kayak strokes and concepts. You’ll have the opportunity to practice various rolls and techniques with your Ottawa Kayak School instructor, who will provide expert guidance to ensure your progression. Throughout the course, you’ll receive personalized feedback to help you refine your skills and tackle the river with confidence.

Teen-Friendly Programs

Our 2-day, 3-day, and 5-day programs are open to teens when accompanied by an adult (18+). This is a fantastic opportunity for young paddlers to develop their skills in a supportive, fun, and safe environment while exploring the thrilling world of whitewater kayaking.

Local Residents: Special Locals Rate Available

If you live in the Ottawa River Valley or don’t need overnight accommodations or meals, take advantage of our local rate! This option allows you to attend the course without the added cost of accommodation, while still benefiting from expert instruction and on-water practice. Arrive at 8 am each day, and enjoy a full day of paddling, typically finishing by 4:30 pm.

What’s Included in Your Whitewater Kayak Experience

14 Meals Included: Enjoy 14 delicious meals throughout your kayaking adventure. Your journey begins with a hearty breakfast on your first day on the water and concludes with a satisfying lunch on your final day.

5 Nights of Camping Included: This program includes 5 nights of camping at a beautiful, campsite. Please note, while campsite accommodation is provided, camping equipment is not included in the package.

Daily Shuttle Included: To ensure your experience is as seamless and stress-free as possible, each day begins with a convenient daily shuttle. You’ll meet your instructor at the Rafters Pavilion, where you’ll enjoy a daily orientation and gear-up session before boarding the shuttle to the river. After a day of paddling, the shuttle will bring you back to the Rafters Pavilion, located within walking distance from your vehicle.

Our local rate includes on-water instruction and your lunches for a reduced rate of $949 per person.

Kayak Club Discounts

Kayaking clubs are so important to the longevity of the whitewater kayaking community. In recognition of their importance Ottawa Kayak School has a special discount for kayak clubs and their organizers.

Choose any one of our preexisting beginner or intermediate 2, 3, or 5-day programs.

When you book 5 for one instructor and 10% off per person.

5+ for two instructors and 20% off per person.

10+ for three instructors and 25% off per person.

Want to add  an additional instructors? It’s $175 per day.

*Please ask your instructor about our coin operated lockers or you always have the option to leave your personal belongings in your car or accommodation, our instructors will have a lockable key box which you’re welcome to leave your keys in prior to each day of kayaking.

All participants must be at least 18 years old OR weigh at least 90 lbs to be participate in this instruction program. No prior experience necessary.

All minors (17 and under) must be accompanied by a participating adult during the activity.

Participants must meet age, weight, and chest size minimums and maximums for the specific trip they are partaking.

Itinerary

Arrival & Check-in:
Your kayak program begins with a 7PM briefing followed directly by a meet and greet.

Day 1 | Gearing Up & Review of the Basics
To best prepare you for your time on water with us, our coaches begin all of our intermediate and advanced programs with a review of the basics. From the way our boats and gear fit to our most basic techniques, our aim is to master the fundamentals.

  • Gearing Up
    Each program begins the same way: an orientation and personalized sizing of the equipment you will be using.
  • Safety Briefing
    Ottawa Kayak Instructors have your safety in mind. Before getting on the water, your instructor will explain the safety procedures for the day.
  • Let’s Kayak!
    Starting with a basics review and focusing on technique, your instructor will help you achieve your goals!
  • Lunch
    Rehydrate and refuel because your day is only half over!
  • More Kayaking!
    Continue challenging yourself! The second half of the day will build upon the first half of your instructor’s lesson plan.
  • Your arrival back to Park Village
    It’s been a full day of whitewater kayaking but don’t run off just yet! Your instructor will provide you with an itinerary for Day 2 and the evening’s entertainment options.

Days 2 & 3 | Implementation of New Skills:
As the program continues, our instructors will encourage you, the participant, to take the skills you learned in Day 1 and implement them in more dynamic scenarios providing feedback along the way through verbal coaching and video review.

Day 4 | Continue Your Progression:
Our instructors will continue to help you progress during Day 4 to help prepare you for culmination day! 

Thursday night, we celebrate the wins of the week together as all adult programs go out to dinner at the Ottawa River Barn. The kayak school leaves at 5:45 pm for our standing 6 pm dinner reservation.

Day 5 | Culmination  Day:
Challenge by choice will be the theme on culmination day. Our instructors will provide opportunities for you to use the new skills you’ve learned throughout the week and push yourself as far as you can!

Equipment Rental:
Ottawa Kayak School is proud to be the World’s first Jackson Kayak super school. For $132 CAD, you can rent a Jackson Kayak (AntiX 2.0 or Rockstar V), paddle (Werner Rio), helmet (Sweet Wanderer) , sprayskirt (LevelSix King), and PFD (NRS Ion) for the duration of your program.

Stayover Package:
Stayover packages bundle your choice of activity with an additional dinner, breakfast, and a night of camping.

Storage Lockers: 
Coin operated storage lockers can be found on-site to keep your valuables safe while you are on the river.
